Darren began struggling with anxiety after making a big move from England to Scotland and trying to adjust to the new environment and surroundings.
Here’s Darren’s story:
In August 2022, I started on a bit of a downward spiral after I moved to Scotland from England and had to adjust to my new surroundings. I’ve struggled with anxiety for as long as I remember, but it seemed to come to a peak this year in around April time. I became frustrated with myself when what used to be simple tasks became much more difficult, and would bring me significant anxiety.
“At the time, I was considering whether I wanted to be around anymore, and whether continuing how I was feeling would be the right thing.”
I stumbled across Back Onside on Twitter, completely out of the blue one day, and had a look at the website. A week or so later, I sent a message explaining what was going on and got an almost instant reply from Libby, who reassured me that everything was going to be okay and put me in touch with one of their counsellors.
Since then, I have had numerous sessions where I’ve been able to offload some of my experiences and reason with my thoughts. Whilst I’m still working through things and still experience anxiety, I am enjoying being able to experience life in whatever way it shows itself and feel better prepared to try and tackle issues when they come up.
I decided to set up a fundraiser for my birthday for the first time this year. It makes me feel good knowing I’ve raised money for a good cause, especially when it’s so personal to me. I’ve done other fundraisers in the past, especially during COVID, and I enjoy the planning and execution of raising money for a good cause. I intend to do more fundraising at some point in the future too, to raise as much money as I can.
I would definitely emphasise that speaking to someone is the best thing to do. I am lucky that I have a wonderful Fiancée who I have gradually been able to open up to and explain my feelings, but sometimes someone impartial does wonders for your emotions. You shouldn’t feel ashamed, scared, worried or embarrassed about speaking to someone about your circumstances. You’ll be amazed how less of a weight it feels once it is off of your chest.
