Kirk is participating in the London Duathlon to raise vital funds for Back Onside this September.
Here’s his story:
In October 2022 I was at my lowest. I was struggling with my physical and mental health, had a terrible lifestyle, and hadn’t trained for years. I’m so lucky to have my amazing wife Deborah, who is always by my side to get me on the right track.
“When I was struggling, I didn’t ever speak about it. Now I know how important it is to talk to someone, and I want you to know that too. I appreciate how hard it is, but give it a go.”
Undertaking the London Duathlon, which involves of a 10k run, 44k cycle then another 5k run, will be a huge effort for me, but I am determined to raise as much money as I can for Back Onside, to help them continue saving lives and helping people every day.
I have always had links to Back Onside being an ex-footballer. I have seen first-hand the amazing work they do and know a lot of people who they have helped. I have battled with my own mental health on and off for years, and never really spoke of it, but now I understand how important it is to talk about whatever is getting you down. Back Onside are a fantastic charity, the work they are doing is helping save lives daily.
My advice to anyone struggling with their mental health would be, remember that there is always a way back. Own the situation you are in, talk about it, and then make a plan.
There is always a solution.
