What is anxiety?

ANXIETY – a word we hear so often. But what is it? 

Everyone has anxiety, even you! We all experience some anxiety at different periods in our life – it’s our brains way of getting us ready to face or escape danger, or deal with stressful situations.

Anxiety is totally normal – you’ve probably felt nervous or anxious if you’re facing a problem at work, attending an interview, or making a big decision. However, some of us, many of us in fact, suffer from anxiety disorder, where these feelings are more than regular nervousness and slight fear. 

Symptoms often include nervousness, panic and fear, as well as physical symptoms, like sweating, chest pains and feeling sick. An anxiety disorder often happens when: 

  • Anxiety restricts with your ability to function
  • You overreact when something triggers your emotions
  • You can’t control your responses to situations 

It’s so easy to get stuck in a vicious, anxious cycle. Generally, anxiety disorder is overwhelming and really scary – a bit like you can’t control your body’s response to situations. The more worried and scared you get about it, the worse your reactions, and feelings get. They may also get more frequent, as you worry more.
